If you have

One district, or Changi Village if you would rather not spend the fare.

  1. Changi publishes the run into the city itself: roughly 30 minutes and S$25 to S$45, all metered, plus an airport surcharge of S$8 between 17:00 and 23:59 and S$6 at other times. The meter adds it for you, so there is nothing to negotiate.
  2. Changi Village sits near the airport on the island's eastern tip, which makes it the six-hour option that costs almost nothing in transit.
  3. Rain falls on about 171 days a year and peaks in the afternoon, so a morning six-hour window is the safer one to spend outdoors.

Local laws that catch crew out

Vapes are illegal to even bring into the country, and drug penalties extend to caning and the death penalty.

  1. E-cigarettes and vapes are banned outright. It is illegal to bring them in, including for personal use, and they will be confiscated and fined. This catches more crew out than anything else on this list.

  2. Drug penalties include imprisonment, caning and the death penalty. Possession above set thresholds is charged as trafficking, and detection technology at the airport is sophisticated.

  3. Public drinking is restricted: only in restaurants, bars and licensed venues between 22:30 and 07:00. Geylang and Little India ban alcohol all weekend and on public holidays and their eves.

  4. Drunk and disorderly behaviour is not tolerated. Drunk incapacity, fighting, or inappropriate touching while intoxicated can bring fines, imprisonment and caning.

Staying connected

Free unregistered WiFi across Changi; tourist SIMs from three operators in every terminal, passport or other ID required.

Changi's free WiFi network is #WiFi@Changi, available in all terminals in both public and transit areas (departure halls, arrival halls, gates, lounges). No registration, account, email, or phone number needed: pick the network, open a browser, tap the WiFi logo on the login page.

Out in Singapore

Eating near the crew hotels

Eat at hawker centres: 123 government-run centres, with Maxwell (Chinatown), Lau Pa Sat (CBD), Tekka (Little India) and Changi Village the ones crew actually reach.

Hawker centres are the default meal, not a fallback: Singapore has 123 markets and hawker centres managed by the National Environment Agency, run as regulated public facilities (tenancies and public health are government-controlled). Centres close periodically; NEA publishes quarterly closure dates.

What to buy

Orchard Road is the shopping strip; edible souvenirs (bak kwa, kueh, tea) are the local buys; GST refund via eTRS kiosks at Changi, minimum S$100 spend.

Orchard Road is the shopping district: a 2.2 km stretch of malls and department stores (ION Orchard, TANGS), covering luxury through high street.
