Getting out

The taxi tariff is published by the authority and the airport flagfall is AED 20 against AED 5 in the city, but the bus is not round the clock: A1 stops at 23:00 and only N2 covers the night.

Ride-hailing

Uber and Yango operate; silver metered taxis are the regulated default, airport taxis carry an AED 20 flagfall.

If you have

One district, and the bus timetable decides whether it is cheap.

  1. The airport taxi starts at an AED 20 flagfall against AED 5 for a silver taxi hailed in the city, so the leg out is the expensive one and the leg back is not.
  2. Bus A1 runs half-hourly from 06:00 with a last departure at 23:00. Land after that and N2 is the only bus, every 15 minutes from 23:15 to 05:45.
  3. Al Zahiyah is where both routes terminate, which makes it the default six-hour district whether or not it was the one you wanted.

Local laws that catch crew out

Drink only inside licensed venues, keep the camera down and the language clean: the UAE prosecutes visitors for behaviour that is unremarkable at home.

  1. Drugs: possession of even the smallest amount of illegal drugs, cannabis included, can bring a minimum three-month prison term or a fine of between AED 20,000 and AED 100,000. Sentences for trafficking can include the death penalty.

  2. CBD: the FCDO warns that some skincare products and e-cigarette refills contain ingredients that are illegal in the UAE, such as CBD oil. If you are found in possession, the products are confiscated and you could face criminal charges. Check your vape refills and your washbag before you pack.

  3. Photography: do not photograph people without their permission. The FCDO records that men have been arrested for photographing women on beaches. It is illegal to photograph some government buildings and military installations, and the FCDO warns that hobbies like plane spotting may be misunderstood, particularly near military sites, government buildings and airports. That applies directly to crew with a camera near the fence.

  4. Same-sex sexual activity is illegal in the UAE and same-sex marriages are not recognised. The FCDO reports individuals being punished for same-sex sexual activity, particularly where there is any public element or where the behaviour has caused offence. Factor that into where you socialise.

Staying connected

A visitor SIM is registered against your passport and capped at two per network, and an unregistered line gets cut off rather than merely warned.

The UAE telecoms regulator, TDRA, allows visitors to register a SIM on a passport, or on a GCC national ID for citizens of Gulf Cooperation Council states. Residents register on an Emirates ID.

Desert climate: pleasant Oct-Mar, brutal 40°C humid heat May-Sep; the state bans midday outdoor work 15 Jun-15 Sep.

October to March is the comfortable window, roughly 18-28°C — this is when outdoor layover plans actually work. May through September runs to 40°C with June-August the hottest months (official tourism board seasonal guide).

Tipping

Not expected but common; high-end restaurants add ~10% service charge plus a 6% tourism levy, otherwise 10-15% is usual.

Tipping is not expected but commonly practised — gratuities to hotel and restaurant staff are at your discretion (official tourism board).

Eating near the crew hotels

Mina Zayed port district is the market-food area: fish souk plus fruit-and-veg souk, haggling is the norm.

Mina Zayed (the old port, Al Mina district) is the city's market-eating area: the Fish Souk sits on the quayside where boats unload their catch, and the Al Mina Fruit and Vegetable Souk is across the road. Haggling over the day's catch is standard practice.

What to buy

Gold at Madinat Zayed Gold Centre, oud, dates and spices in the souks; 5% VAT is refundable via Planet at departure.

Gold is the marquee buy: the Gold Centre at Madinat Zayed Shopping Centre is a venue the tourism board names, selling gold, diamond and pearl jewellery. The mall itself has 400+ shops with traditional souk traders mixed in.
