What crew need on the ground

The high speed rail station sits inside the terminal, and it shuts at 00:30, which decides most crew transfers here.

Getting out

A Haramain high speed rail station sits inside the airport terminal and runs 06:30 to 00:30, so anything outside those hours is a road transfer.

Ride-hailing

Uber operates at JED and is bookable 24/7; Careem also runs airport rides there.

If you have

Al-Balad and back, if the train is running or you accept the drive.

  1. The Haramain station is inside the terminal building, so you do not leave it to reach the train, but it runs only 06:30 to 00:30. Outside those hours this is a road transfer.
  2. Al-Balad is about a 40-minute drive from the airport, or 17 minutes from the Al-Sulaymaniyah high speed rail station, which itself opens an hour later and closes an hour earlier than the airport one.
  3. Miss your train and the ticket is invalidated and not refunded, so build margin rather than booking the tightest connection.

Local laws that catch crew out

Alcohol, dress, photography and public behaviour are all regulated, and the penalties the FCDO lists run to fines, prison and deportation.

  1. Alcohol is illegal. The FCDO says do not bring alcohol into Saudi Arabia or arrive under the influence, and that it is illegal to drink alcohol or be drunk in public. Police have arrested British nationals for disorderly or offensive behaviour when drinking. Brewing, possessing or selling can bring severe penalties including prison. Alcohol is also a prohibited import, alongside pork products and pornographic material, so duty free stays on the aircraft.

  2. There is zero tolerance for drug offences and the penalties are severe. You can get a prison sentence of up to five years and a fine of 30,000 Saudi riyals for possessing even small amounts, and the FCDO warns you may face a long period of detention before trial. Dealing and smuggling can result in the death penalty.

  3. Men and women must wear loose-fitting clothing that covers the elbow and below the knees. Avoid clothing that is tight-fitting, carries profane slogans or images, or carries symbols or slogans that could be viewed as political, which the FCDO warns can lead to arrest. Female travellers do not have to wear an abaya or cover their hair.

  4. Sex outside marriage and adultery are illegal, including for tourists, and if you or your partner becomes pregnant outside marriage you could both face penalties including imprisonment and deportation. Same-sex relations are illegal, though the FCDO notes legal action is uncommon. There are special arrangements for visitors and unmarried tourists may share hotel rooms. It is illegal to practise any religion other than Islam, though the authorities accept private practice, and illegal to try to convert people.

Getting out of the airport

The Haramain high speed rail Airport station is an integrated structure within the main terminal building at King Abdulaziz International Airport. The operator describes it as a transport hub connecting the terminal with high speed rail, buses, shuttles, taxis and car parking, so you do not leave the building to reach the train.

Weather

Desert heat year-round; mid-June to mid-September is severe enough that the state bans midday outdoor work.
