Los Angeles

What crew need on the ground

LAX is close to the coast on a map and a long way from everything in traffic, so the layover is decided by the single neighbourhood you commit to before you leave the terminal.

Getting out

There is no train from the gate: the rail station sits away from the terminals and you reach it on a free shuttle bus.

Ride-hailing

Uber, Lyft and Opoli are LAX's authorised ride apps, and they pick up at the LAX-it lot next to Terminal 1.

If you have

Six hours at LAX is the airport, and at a stretch the nearest stretch of coast.

  1. The exit alone costs time. There is no train from the gate: you clear the terminal, find the arrivals level shuttle stop, and ride a bus before you have started moving toward anywhere.
  2. Downtown is a bad bet. Both the rail chain and the coach put you on the far side of the city with no margin for the return leg.
  3. If you go out at all, pick one place, walk it, and come straight back.

Neighbourhoods
  • Santa Monica

The closest dense, walkable grid to LAX with hotels and a beach, which is why short layovers default here. Its own city, and its own higher sales tax at 10.75 per cent.

  • Venice

Walkable from Santa Monica along the shore, and back inside the City of Los Angeles, so the lower 9.75 per cent sales tax applies.

  • West Hollywood

Bars and restaurants concentrated tightly enough to work without a car. A separate city, with its own sales tax rate of 10.50 per cent.

  • Beverly Grove

Shops and food between West Hollywood and the museums. A short hop rather than a commitment if you are already mid-city.

  • Downtown Los Angeles

Union Station is here, which makes it the one district reachable from the terminal kerb on a single published coach route with no change.

Local laws that catch crew out

Cannabis is legal in the state and still barred from federal land, and your phone is inspectable at the border.

  1. Cannabis is legal to buy from a licensed retailer at 21 and over, but it may not be smoked anywhere it is illegal to smoke tobacco, may not be taken across a state line, and may not be used or possessed on federal lands such as national parks. An open container of cannabis in a vehicle is an offence: it travels in a sealed container or in the boot.

  2. No person under 21 is allowed on public premises, and no alcohol may be consumed on licensed premises between 2am and 6am. A container packaged for you by the licensed premises counts as an open container: it must travel in the boot, or in some other part of the vehicle not normally occupied by the driver or passengers, and it may not be drunk in public where open containers are prohibited by law.

  3. Crossing outside a crosswalk is no longer a routine stop. Since AB 2147, chaptered in 2022, an officer may not stop a pedestrian for it unless a reasonably careful person would realise there is an immediate danger of a collision with a moving vehicle.

  4. Every person arriving in or departing from the United States is subject to inspection, and CBP officers may search a phone, computer or camera during it. You must present a device in a condition that allows it and its contents to be examined. If a foreign national refuses, CBP may weigh that non-compliance when making an admissibility decision.

Getting out of the airport

The LAX/Metro Transit Center is a separate site from the passenger terminals. Metro's own instruction is to connect between the terminals and the station on a free, frequent shuttle, which loads at bus bays 1 and 2 on the station side.

Weather

Dry and mild at the coast for most of the year, and the sea is more dangerous than a calm afternoon suggests.

At LAX the August normals against the 1991 to 2020 period are an average maximum of 76.7F, about 25C, and an average minimum of 64.8F, about 18C. Normal precipitation for the month is 0.00 inches. August 2026 itself ran warm against that, at 80.8F and 69.0F.

Tipping

A tip is the employee's property by statute, and it is on top of a full minimum wage, not instead of one.

Under Labor Code section 351 a gratuity is the sole property of the employee or employees to whom it is given. The employer may not take a share of it.

Out in Los Angeles

Eating near the crew hotels

A letter grade on the door tells you the inspection score, and the menu price is never the price you pay.

Los Angeles County restaurants must have a grade card or score card posted, and an inspector verifies it at every inspection. A is a score of 90 to 100, B is 80 to 89, C is 70 to 79. Below 70 the placard carries the numeric score rather than a letter, and a score under 70 at a routine inspection triggers suspension of the permit and closure of the facility.

What to buy

Tax is added at the till, the rate changes with the city boundary, and there is no refund counter on the way out.

The statewide rate is 7.25 per cent and local districts add between 0.10 and 2.00 per cent on top, so the shelf price is never the price at the register.
