Getting out

Riyadh Metro Line 4 runs into King Khalid International Airport with a separate station for each terminal cluster, but the only travel window RCRC has published is 6:00 am to midnight.

Ride-hailing

Ride-hailing is a licensed activity the Transport General Authority actively polices, so stay on a mainstream app and take complaints to the TGA rather than the driver.

If you have

One district, and only if the metro is running.

  1. Line 4 runs into King Khalid International with a separate station for each terminal cluster, so use the one matching your terminal rather than walking between them. Operating for a non-Saudi airline normally puts you at Terminal 5.
  2. The only travel window RCRC has published is 06:00 to midnight, and its FAQ gives no hours at all. Treat a late arrival or a pre-dawn pickup as road transport, and check the Darb app before planning around a train.
  3. Fares are time-based rather than by distance. SAR 4 buys two hours, and passes expire at the end of the operational day rather than running on into the next one.

Local laws that catch crew out

Islamic law is strictly enforced, the offences that catch crew are ordinary at home, your phone counts as evidence, and the US advisory currently sits at level 3.

  1. Alcohol: do not bring any into the country and do not arrive under the influence. Alcohol is on the FCDO's list of goods it is illegal to import, it is illegal to drink alcohol or be drunk in public, and you can face severe penalties including prison for brewing, possessing or selling it.

  2. Drugs: there is zero tolerance and the penalties are severe. You can get a prison sentence of up to five years and a 30,000 Saudi riyal fine for possessing even small amounts, and dealing or smuggling can result in a death sentence. The US State Department lists marijuana, cannabis and CBD products and their derivatives as illegal, with criminal sentences of many years in jail or death.

  3. Prescription medicines: many need approval before you bring them into or out of the country, and the US State Department advises registering listed prescriptions on the Controlled Drug System website before you travel, a process it says may take several weeks. The FCDO says some prescribed and over-the-counter medicines are controlled substances, that UK prescriptions are not accepted, and that you should carry an official prescription, hospital note or GP letter stating the amount prescribed, the drug and dosage, your doctor's signature and a clinic or hospital stamp.

  4. Social media and exit bans: Saudi authorities may detain you over online activity they consider critical, offensive or disruptive to public order, and the State Department says this may include posting, re-posting or liking, and comments posted while outside Saudi Arabia. It records prison sentences of up to 45 years for social media activity. Separately, exit bans over unpaid debts, disputes, legal cases or investigations can stop you leaving, they can last years, and the State Department notes many travellers do not find out about one until they go to the airport.

Getting out of the airport

King Khalid International Airport reallocated its terminals between 16 and 25 February 2026. Terminals 1 and 2 now take the national carriers' international flights, Terminals 3 and 4 their domestic flights, and Terminal 5 foreign carriers' international flights. Operating for a non-Saudi airline normally puts you at Terminal 5.

Ride-hailing

Passenger transport apps are licensed by the Transport General Authority. On 31 March 2024 the TGA suspended two ride-hailing applications and four food delivery applications for operating without the required licences, so an unfamiliar app is a live risk rather than a theoretical one.
