Eating near the crew hotels in Toronto
Every eating and drinking place posts its latest inspection notice at the door, the menu price may or may not include tax, and the alcohol clock stops at 02:00.
Every drinking and eating establishment in Toronto must continually and prominently post its most recent food safety inspection notice, as issued and without alteration, at or near the main entrance. There are three notices: Pass, Conditional Pass and Closed. The green Pass notice is issued when only minor infractions or none are observed. Infractions are graded crucial, significant or minor.
Ontario's HST is 13 per cent. A business only has to tell you whether the tax is included in the price or added separately, and it may do that on a receipt, an invoice, a contract or a posted sign, so check rather than assume the menu price is the price.
Alcohol service stops at 02:00 and all signs of liquor are cleared 45 minutes later, so a kitchen still open late is not the same as a bar still serving.
Ontario law treats a service or similar charge imposed by the business as a tip rather than revenue, where a reasonable person would believe the money would be kept by an employee or shared among employees. A bill carrying one has already tipped.
